The Remington 870 was the fourth major design in a series of Remington pump shotguns.
John Pedersen designed the fragile Remington Model 10 (and later the improved Remington Model 29).
By 1996, spurred by sales of the basic "Express" models, which were added as a lower-cost alternative to the original Wingmaster line, sales topped seven million guns.
On April 13, 2009, the ten millionth Model 870 was produced.
Remington sought to correct that in 1951 by introducing a modern, streamlined, rugged, reliable, and relatively inexpensive shotgun – the 870. They reached two million guns by 1973 (ten times the number of Model 31 shotguns it replaced).
As of 1983, the 870 held the record for best-selling shotgun in history with three million sold.
REMINGTON MANUFACTURING DATE CODE stamped on LH top rear of barrel, 2 or 3 digit, (month first, year after) these will normally only be the last letters as seen below, The factory says all barrels are date code stamped, well I have found some that are not, or if they are, are so erratic stamping that trying to decipher them is impossible. Both were taken off Remington 760s, with the one on the left, a 30-06 that I bought new October 10, 1954. The one on the right again a 30-06, but with a shorter barrel that I made into a knock around quad rifle with pivot mounts.
(*) On 8/9/99, they stopped stamping the barrels with the date code.
For shotguns with removeable barrels, the code will be valid for the manufacture of the barrel; maybe for the receiver, as barrels do get switched around.

**The first letter on your barrel is the month your firearm was manufactured; the second letter is the year it was manufactured.
Since letters have obviously been repeated, it's vital to know when your Remington model was introduced/discontinued. A lot of people don't realize just how prevalent barrel swapping is, but just as an example I have 5 Remington shotguns and 10 barrels, and I only have the one choke tubed barrel for the 28.
I know which barrel was original with what, but depending on how they are assembled when I die, I wouldn't place a lot of bets on how some of them get sold And, Remington's friendly "call them and they will tell you when it was made" service is highly unreliable in my opinion. It gets used alot looking for barrels on the auction sites.
The Remington Model 870 is a pump-action shotgun manufactured by Remington Arms Company, LLC.
